1960's Floral Hair Accessories

Floral Adornment

Flowers have been the most natural and readily available beauty accessory since the beginning of time. In the late 1800's Queen Victoria made this trend popular once again. In Hawaii it is tradition to wear a flower behind your left ear to show you are single, or behind your right ear to show yo are taken or married. Flowers are still today used in hairstyles from a simple beachy summer hair style to an extravagant bridal up-do. It is tradition to receive a corsage on prom night as a gift from your loved one. Today, women still receive flowers for many reasons, usually as a gift to show appreciation or love. In this day in age however,it is a woman's right to gift herself the great present of natural beauty by showering herself in love and adorning her hair with beautiful flowers.

Every flower has it's own specific secret meaning. To most you will simply look extra stylish with a flower in your hair, but as history tells us, there is a much deeper meaning.

Daisy - innocence and purity
Gardenia - secret love
Camellia - gratitude
Ginger - strength
Tuberose - forbidden pleasures
Hibiscus - delicate beauty, sensitivity
Red Rose - passion, love
Pink Rose - friendship, admiration, happiness
Apricot Rose - desire, admiration, modesty
White Rose - purity, secrecy, spiritual love
Jasmine - Sensuality
Yellow Carnation - disappointment, rejection
Spider Flower - “run away with me”
Violet - modesty, faithfulness

Hair Flowers

I started an Etsy account to sell my one of a kind unique hair flower clips! I have been making these for myself to wear for years, and figured it was time to share them. I wear flowers in my hair basically every day. I think they help complete every look, from casually pulled back to romantically swept up.

Gil Elvgren Haircolor

"Gentlemen Prefer...?"

Express yourself through hair color. Blonde? Brunette? Redhead? Why stop there! What about Purple? Pink? Blue? Green? And every shade in between! Show your creativity and reap the rewards a healthy head of bright hair brings to your entire life. The burden of dull hair has been lifted!

Vintage Blonde Hair Dye

Pick the Blonde you want to be!
The best part about blonde hair is how the slightest tint can change the whole look. Choosing a toner when you are blonde can mean the difference between a strawberry blonde and a platinum blonde. The light tint of orange or the light tint of purple  on top of the blonde makes you the blonde you want to be. Customize your  own personal shade, and be your own blonde!

Beautiful Hair Colors of the 50's. If it wasn't for these color experiments, there wouldn't be as many great products out there today. Thinking outside of the box when it come to hair color is one of the greatest statements a woman can make about herself. It shows confidence, and these women were up for trying anything

1950's Beauty Guide - Healthy Hair

1950's guide to hair care. Even in the 50's they new some basics that are true for healthy hair. Don't wash your hair every day. When hair is 'dirty' with natural oils you should brush it to distribute the oils evenly, repairing the ends. Use a paddle brush for best distribution. You should never brush wet hair. Instead, detangle with a wide tooth comb. Also be sure to use a protecting spray when using heat, and a protecting spray when going out in the sun, especially in summer and especially if you have color treated hair. I have not tried it yet, but I'm going to buy Zotos Porosity Equalizer for a daily leave in treatment to equalize porous ends, protect from harmful U.V Rays from the sun and protect from heat styling. I've never heard of a product with all three so I'm excited! I'll post a review on it after using for a few days.

While this hair-styling video is a good start, especially considering it was made in the 50's there are many more tips and tricks to keeping hair healthy, especially when trying to grow it out. The products on the market today are so vast and useful that there is no reason for anyone to have terribly damaged hair.

Not Of This Earth

Retro Space Age brings out the pin-up in every martian girl. The thirst for knowledge of the unknown in the past has led to constant creative ideas on what life on other planets would really be like. Of course, a common fantasy is that of a super sexy bombshell alien girl, with antennas and large breasts. If there's said to be life forms on other planets, why couldn't it be a race of  super hot Martian babes? Even Barbie was fashion forward into the space age during a time where people wanted more, a greater explanation for why things are the way they are, and a general searching for the light of what could be out there.

Space Age Hair Fashions

This video combines the intrigued woman of the past who was always searching for new beauty ideas to stand out from the crowd (this video reminds me of Edward Scissorhands) and the fantasy of that beautiful martian girl brought to life through Space Age Hairstyling.

Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Tint

This Lip Stick is absolutely amazing! The reason I'm dong this post is because, I have had Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte LipTint in Lively for well over a year now, and it is hands down the best lipstick I have ever had, and I have had a lot. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. The Color- Seriously the best color for my skin tone, hair color, eye color, everything! It's a gorgeous deep almost magenta but does not look clownish. It is a blue based pink which means it does not make your lips look yellow which I love because I love every shade of Pink and some lipsticks make my teeth look horribly yellow!
  2. The texture/ finish. I am all about MATTE! Matte foundation, matte eye shadow, matte nail polish and matte lipstick. I am not a glossy kind of girl. I think matte looks so much classier, and so much more touchable (and kissable) then glossy. I almost feel like a color like this wouldn't work if it was glossy, but since it's matte it's gorgeous. Also some matte stuff is really dry when it finishes so it gets peely and doesn't feel wearable because it is so stiff. This however is NOT the case with this lip color. It glides on smoothly and looks great on.
  3. Despite first appearances you get the most bang for your buck. Even though the original price tag on this lip stick is a whopping $24, I use this lip color almost every single day and have had it for over a year. I still have almost half a stick left, It's unbelievable.
  4. Long lasting. This color lasts for hours and I think that if it wasn't for eating and drinking it would probably last all day. I can put it on first thing when i do my makeup in the morning, and won't need to reapply it until late afternoon.
**My only hope for this line if lipstick is that Tarte comes out with more colors with a matte finish that way I never have to buy another brand again!**

Semi Permanent Hair Color

There are so many different types and brands of hair dye out there that it can often be hard to choose, and when you go into a store and see all of the different choices it can be VERY overwhelming.

When it comes Semi Permanent Hair dye there are a few main reasons why you would choose this type.

  1. I think the most common reason is because of the type of colors and color range. If you want hot fuchsia or deep emerald hair, a typical permanent hair dye is not going to cut it
  2. You want to change the color of your hair but you don't want to damage it.
  3. You don't want the commitment that comes along with typical hair dye. You either just want a hint or tint of color or you want to try it out for a little while to see if you like it before going permanent.
If any of that sounds like you then semi permanent is the type. Now lets talk brand.
No matter the reason, there are definitely some brands that are far superior to others. Also, when choosing which brand of semi permanent dye you will use, it really depends what your looking for. For me I want a color that is vibrant and will last as long as possible with as little fade as possible. However if you like to change the color dramatically and often, like from pink to green to red, in a matter of months or even weeks, then you are looking for a brand that is bright and vivid but will fade out in a few washes (probably 10 -20).

I have tried so many different brands and I like many of them, there are few that I truly hate but my favorite has got to be Jerome Russell Punky Colours. I have tried just about every color in this brand and loved them all. It is long lasting which is great. It hardly fades which I love, and mixes great so you can perfect your own shade. The only problem with this dye is that availability in stores is very limited. Sally's does not carry it. The only place besides some random beauty supply stores in the mall that for sure has it is Ulta, and even still every time I go in there the selection is less and less.

I typically buy online from either idyemyhair.com or follica.com . Either way the dye will run you about $8 or $9 a jar. This is kind of expensive considering if you have long hair you will probably need two or maybe even three but it is well worth it for the amazing color. And you will not have to buy as often as other brands because of how long lasting this brand is.

The only other brand that I have really liked is Manic Panic. They have some amazing colors and if you want something a bit less permanent then manic panic is the way to go. Manic Panic is much easier to find than other brands. Sally's sells it and I think you can even get it at Hot Topic (if it's worth going in there).

I have tried some other brands and am going to start experimenting more again to see if any of the newer ones out there are any better. I will post my reviews on them as individual posts, and as I come across pictures of how past colors came out on my hair, I will post those as well.

*Some brands that I plan to try:

  1. Ion Color Brilliance Brights Semi-Permanent Hair Color Magenta- I have heard both good and bad things about this but I figure it's worth a try.
  2. Adore Semi Permanent Hair Color- I have heard only great things about this brand, but have heard that it's kind of runny which usually means it fades fairly quickly.
  3. La Riche Directions- I have tried before but only certain colors. Wasn't crazy impressed but would probably try again.

*** If any of you have any suggestions or have tried any of these I would love to hear your input. It's so hard to find good reviews on hair dye brands. Or even If you have any pictures of what colors you have used and how they turned out that would be amazing!***

Coconut Oil Hot Oil Treatment

I have tried many hot oil treatments, but the one I have found most successful so far is Coconut Oil. I actually bought this at the grocery store, it was a pretty large jar for 10 dollars, and that jar will literally last you months! And I use coconut oil for everything from acne to Rosacea to split ends to a dry scalp.

For this treatment, what I usually do is put the stopper in my sing and fill it up with hot water. Then I put the closed jar standing up in the sink in the hot water and let it sit there for like five or ten minutes until it is all melted.

You could do this after you wash your hair, or just wet your hair down, and towel dry first. You don't want to apply it to soaking wet hair. You can section your hair into four or five if you want, or just plop some right on your head, I've done both and gotten great results either way.

After your hair is thoroughly coated, put a shower cap over your head (or saran wrap or a towel). Then blow dry your hair to ensure penetration. I usually do this for about 10 minutes and then I unwrap my hair and comb through the oil one ore time now that it's even warmer.

Next I leave my hair for another 10 minutes roughly, maybe 15, to cool down so it locks in some more of the oil into the cuticle. When You rinse this oil form your hair, if you have a clarifying shampoo that would work perfectly, or just shampoo your hair twice. You won't need to condition. The reason I say to shampoo twice or with a clarifying shampoo is because this oil is pure and uncut with any additives, it is very heavy and dense, so if you don't rinse it all out it can leave your hair feeling greasy.

This treatment is truly one of the best things I have ever done for my hair, and I usually repeat once every or every other week.  I hope it works the same wonders for your hair naturally as it has for mine.

Curly Hair Care Review

Safe For Color Treated Hair Too!

Curls Unleashed Shampoo
Curls Unleashed Conditioner

When I first saw this product I knew I had to have it! This was the only time I had ever seen a product advertised for both curly and color treated hair, both of which I have. For beautiful, nourished curls the key is hydration. For parched color- treated hair the key is also hydration. In this Sulfate-Free , Paraben-Free Formula, Curls get maximum hydration without any harsh ingredients to strip color out.

Each the shampoo and conditioner are $10.00 each, which is a little pricey, but you need so little of  both that this is sure to last you awhile, and it is well worth the price. The first day I used it my hair felt a little greasy from the leave in conditioner, but by the next use my hair was totally used to it. This is my daily shampoo and conditioner and I highly recommend it to anybody with wavy to extremely curly hair, and color treated or over processed hair.

Deep Conditioning Hair Care Reviews

The biggest part of my hair care regimen besides coloring is deep conditioning. With the level of lift I usually need to achieve the brightness of the colors I want my hair to be, some damage is inevitable. I have tried so many different types and brands of deep conditioning treatments and protein re-builders and what not that I figured I would share a few of my favorites.

**Most of the products I purchase at my local Sally's Beauty Supply but some I do get from a store called Cosmoprof. For the most part I will try to only share the products I get from Sally's on this blog, because to shop at Cosmoprof you must be a beauty professional or a cosmetology student. However, if i find a product there that I am absolutely obsessed with I'll post that on here as well, because I'm sure there are other places online you can get them from without a cosmetology licence.**

I've come across a few different types of conditioning treatments that each serve different purposes, but all of which aid in the strength and condition of your hair.

Hair Masque

  1. Beyond the Zone Last Call Hair Masque- Great Conditioner, repairs damage and has these weird little purple balls in it like a body scrub would.
  2. Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Pak- Soothes scalp and restores texture really well, especially in curly hair. Can make hair a little greasy though.

Protein Re-builder

  1. Ion Reconstructor- Restores moisture to weak hair. Works well to even out the porosity in ends of hair. Great to use as a pre-color treatment.
  2. Nutress Hair Moisturizing Protein Pack- Rebuilds brittle hair. Great mint scent. Best if used as a pre-color treatment to even out porosity in ends of hair, and ensure even color coverage.

Hot Oil Treatment
  1. Ion Hot Oil- Increases hair elasticity. A great treatment to combat frizz and tame fly-a-ways.  Leaves previously damaged ends shiny and soft.
  2. Proclaim Olive Hot Oil- Moisturizes lifeless, dull hair adding luster and shine. Makes styling hair easier and more manageable.

* When it comes to hot oil treatments I honestly think the best is just pure coconut oil.* (see my coconut oil hot oil treatment post) You could also try a Jojoba Oil or pure Argan Oil Treatments as well for similar results, or make a blend of your own to fit the specific needs of your hair.

Color Treated
  1. Ion Color Defense After Color Sealer- Ensures vibrancy of hair color by sealing hairs' cuticle and extending hair color. Balances pH of hair adding moisture and shine.
  2. Ion Color Defense Intensive Shine Treatment- Perfect after color treatment that leaves hair silky and vibrant with intense shine. Use as a weekly treatment to prolong the life of your hair color by intensifying moisture and combating dull and lifeless appearance.

All of these great treatments are under $5 and I posted links to all of them in the single use packette size. This is what I usually get because I like to change up the type of conditioning I'm using often, but if you try some of these out and find one that you think works best for you, I would recommend buying the larger size bottle of the product, and using it as a once a week treatment like every Sunday or whatever day you have free time. Most of these products say in the instructions to leave on for 3-5 minutes, but I usually leave them on for 20 minutes to a half an hour, if not longer. For even better results, I usually cover my head with a Shower Cap (10 count for 3 dollars) and I always reuse them since they're only in contact with conditioner, no chemicals. After putting the cap on I use a blow dryer on it for about ten minutes and then let cool for ten to twenty minutes.

***A good investment for anyone who uses these treatments regularly, or also anyone who dyes their hair with semi permanent colors (Manic Panic, Punky Colours, Beyond the Zone, N Rage, etc) is a table top Hood DryerI had one for the longest time and it was the best investment ever, but I was careless with it and it broke. Every treatment does better to penetrate the hair with some help from heat. Plus your arm doesn't get tired from the blow dryer and you can read a magazine so you're not so bored. ***
