When it comes Semi Permanent Hair dye there are a few main reasons why you would choose this type.
- I think the most common reason is because of the type of colors and color range. If you want hot fuchsia or deep emerald hair, a typical permanent hair dye is not going to cut it
- You want to change the color of your hair but you don't want to damage it.
- You don't want the commitment that comes along with typical hair dye. You either just want a hint or tint of color or you want to try it out for a little while to see if you like it before going permanent.
If any of that sounds like you then semi permanent is the type. Now lets talk brand.
No matter the reason, there are definitely some brands that are far superior to others. Also, when choosing which brand of semi permanent dye you will use, it really depends what your looking for. For me I want a color that is vibrant and will last as long as possible with as little fade as possible. However if you like to change the color dramatically and often, like from pink to green to red, in a matter of months or even weeks, then you are looking for a brand that is bright and vivid but will fade out in a few washes (probably 10 -20).
I have tried so many different brands and I like many of them, there are few that I truly hate but my favorite has got to be Jerome Russell Punky Colours. I have tried just about every color in this brand and loved them all. It is long lasting which is great. It hardly fades which I love, and mixes great so you can perfect your own shade. The only problem with this dye is that availability in stores is very limited. Sally's does not carry it. The only place besides some random beauty supply stores in the mall that for sure has it is Ulta, and even still every time I go in there the selection is less and less.
I typically buy online from either idyemyhair.com or follica.com . Either way the dye will run you about $8 or $9 a jar. This is kind of expensive considering if you have long hair you will probably need two or maybe even three but it is well worth it for the amazing color. And you will not have to buy as often as other brands because of how long lasting this brand is.
The only other brand that I have really liked is Manic Panic. They have some amazing colors and if you want something a bit less permanent then manic panic is the way to go. Manic Panic is much easier to find than other brands. Sally's sells it and I think you can even get it at Hot Topic (if it's worth going in there).
I have tried some other brands and am going to start experimenting more again to see if any of the newer ones out there are any better. I will post my reviews on them as individual posts, and as I come across pictures of how past colors came out on my hair, I will post those as well.
